Best Summer Wine Picks

Updated: Feb 8

Summer is getting to an end soon and it's very possible you would prefer seeing the best wine picks for this autumn instead. But wait, why to hurry? There are so many wines to boost your mood and prolong the summer. Whether you are enjoying a light picnic or a full BBQ range in the backyard, there are great wines to consider trying. Check out some of our favourite bottles.

Moscato

Moscato wines are the ultimate summer wines! Light in its body, refreshing and so pleasantly sweet, Moscato wines are great to be enjoyed throughout the day due to low alcohol volume. Avoid commercial Moscato wines as they often contain a large amount of added sugar, and in practice it does not taste well. Opt for organic Moscato or quality brands to ensure natural sweetness. Moscato is great as an aperitif and it goes well with a wide range of desserts: try fresh fruits, jam pastries and fresh cheesecake.

Prosecco and Prosecco Rosé

Fairly straightforward: if Moscato is too light for you, pick Prosecco and you won't miss. Particularly in the summer it is the best time to sip Extra Dry sparkling wines with a tiny bit more sweetness, rather than the Brut counterpart. We like to experiment and sample the regular Prosecco and the pink one. The regular Prosecco will give more citrus and floral notes, while the sparkling Rosé has more notes of fresh berries, such as strawberry and cranberry. Best enjoyed on its own as an aperitif, similarly pair your Prosecco with light salads, bruschetta or seafood.

Chardonnay

Chardonnay can be the best option for the late evening dinner: from light Chardonnay full of minerality to powerful creamy oaked wines. Personally, during the summer we choose light to medium body Chardonnay to match some roast chicken, grilled white fish or warm salads. In this case we look for notes of honey, flowers, peach, tropical and citrus fruits, and a fresh hint of minerality.

Sangiovese Superiore

You can and you should enjoy red wines during summers! Especially if white wines are not your first choice. Start with medium-bodied red wines, such as Sangiovese. Don't want to break the bank? Opt for entry-to-mid range Sangiovese wines that will go well with braised meats, cold cuts, tomato-based pizza and pasta dishes. Our favourite tip: try such Sangiovese slightly fresh. Not too cold, but a bit below the room temperature. It can accentuate the fruit-forward flavours and refresh on a warm night.

Rosso di Montalcino

Want to treat yourself and spend a bit extra? Consider Rosso di Montalcino wines. 100% Sangiovese but a whole new level of finesse. Bold wines like Rosso di Montalcino have good depth and intensity, and are well aged to add nice smoky aromas and woody notes. You still get the classic flavours of spice, figs, dried cherries on top. Excellent wine for a summer barbecue session! Also try it with a variety of hard cheeses, yumm.
